WiE Events 2020-21
All of our events for this year were hosted online! We’d like to send out a huge thank you to our WiE community for participating and having fun with us while staying safe!
Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Annual Mentorship Conference – March 10, 2021
Our 11th annual mentorship conference WiSE was held online this year and a huge online success! Students had the opportunity to hear from female* engineers doing amazing work in their respective fields through our keynote speaker and panellists as well as their thoughts on overcoming the challenges that women* in STEM face. Students also had the opportunity to participate in 1-on-1 mentoring sessions at the end of the evening with mentors of their choice.
Python Programming Workshop – February 20, 2021
Students joined us for a programming workshop hosted by Rita Hill, founder of Refactoring Tech, where they learned about different programming skills that are currently used in the workplace as well as how to code their own app! In groups, students were able to design and code a lyric guessing game app that played fill in the blanks with their favourite songs.
Mentorship Program Closing Event – January 30, 2021
Bringing our mentorship program to a close, the Outreach and Education Committee hosted a morning full of social activites and games for all the mentors and mentees. During the event, everyone also participated in a Warm Fuzzies board where they put up sticky notes about what they enjoyed most about the program. We’d like to thank all of the mentors for donating their time and all of the mentees for participating in the first ever online mentorship program we’ve had. We hope that everyone enjoyed the experience and hope to see you again next year!
Community Collaboration Social – January 15, 2021
To kick off the new year our Community Engagement hosted a social with different student groups across engineering including design teams and our E-IDEAS student groups! Students were able to connect with each other in a casual setting and played some games in order to get to know others outside of their respective student groups.
Mentorship Program Opening Event- November 28, 2020
Our Outreach and Education Committee has organized a virtual mentorship program with 72 female* mentees from high schools across the Lower Mainland and 26 female* UBC engineering students. The program aims to increase female representation through access to mentors and the program curriculum focuses on guiding high school students through their university application process while giving them insight into what university and engineering life are like over the course of three months.

Our panelists included upper year undergraduate students as well as members from industry and the discussion highlighted getting involved in student clubs, design teams, various industry and research opportunities, as well as some tips and tricks for navigating undegrad.
WiE Chats – October 2020
For the month of October, our Community Engagement committee organized WiE Chats: virtual coffee between members of our organization! Members were randomly paired and given the opportunity to get to know someone from WiE they might not have met before.
WiE Kickoff – September 26, 2020
Our annual WiE Kickoff was hosted via Zoom this year in order to welcome all of our new committee members to our WiE team. This event featured an introduction of our executive team and committee members, a little bit of information and training about Women in Engineering, an overview of the exciting plans each committee has for the upcoming year, and finally a social organized by our Social Coordinator where committee members had the opportunity to “Speed Date” each other and entered a heated debate on the most essential house hold item. The winner: the bed.
