Awards for Students in Applied Science

Eligibility requirements:

• be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
• have completed the first-year program in a Canadian faculty of engineering and intend to continue their studies in engineering;
• be entering the second year of a first bachelor of engineering degree program in September 2023; Full-time engineering students in co-operative programs with a work term in the second term of first year may apply before the start of their fourth study term.
• be nominated by an eligible institution. UBC is an eligible institution.
• Students must have attained a first class standing as defined by UBC (80% average or better);

How to apply:

• Electronic applications (download nomination form) must be submitted via email to danalyn.mackenzie@ubc.ca with the subject line: C.D. Howe Scholarship Competition-[Last name, first name].
• Students should be sure to supply both their high school transcript and a copy of their UBC Academic History.

Eligibility requirements: 

• Applicant must self-identify as a female
• possess Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency Status
• be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited Engineering Program within Canada and cannot be in their final year of study as of September 2022
   

How to apply:

• Submit one application to be considered for several awards worth $5,000-10,000 each. 
• The application has a number of components and it is recommended that students leave themselves plenty of time to complete the application and obtain references. 
• One award requirement is a letter of support from the Dean, Assistant or Associate Dean or a Department Head. 
• The request for a letter of support from the Dean must include a draft of the written portions of their application.

The APSC Dean’s Academic Excellence Award will be given to the top graduate student across all fields in Applied Science who demonstrates strong academic and research track record, and has made significant contributions to their chosen field of study.

Nominations will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary selection committee appointed by the Dean’s office. The selection committee discussion will generally be on the following:

• Nominee’s academic record (CV)
• Review on letters of reference for Nominee’s academic achievements, innovation, and personal initiative and meaningful contributions to advancing knowledge within their field of study.

Evaluation Criteria

The APSC Dean’s Extracurricular Contributions Award will be given to a graduate student across all fields in Applied Science who brings high honor to the Faculty and the UBC community through their participation or leadership in extracurricular activities. The successful awardee will be an individual who has inspired their colleagues and the community through their actions and has made a lasting impact through their efforts.

Nominations will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary selection committee appointed by the Dean’s office. The selection committee discussion will generally be on the following:

• Review on Nominee’s CV and letters of reference for Nominee’s leadership, innovation and personal initiative in meaningful contribution to others through extra-curricular activities.

• Nominee must be current graduate student in the Faculty of Applied Science at Vancouver campus and School of Engineering Okanagan Campus.

• Either the Knowledge Translation element or the Entrepreneurship element will qualify, not necessarily both elements

The APSC Dean’s Graduate Award for Knowledge Translation & Entrepreneurship will be given to a graduate student across all fields in Applied Science who has successfully conveyed research results through presentations, patents, development of products or business creation

Nominations will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary selection committee appointed by the Dean’s office. The selection committee discussion will generally be on the following:

• Review on Nominee’s CV and letters of reference for Nominee’s strategic and innovative thinking, sound problem solving skills, innovative enterprise design & development, and future state visioning.

• Nominee must be current graduate student in the Faculty of Applied Science at UBC Vancouver campus and School of Engineering Okanagan Campus.

The APSC Dean’s Leadership Award will be given to a graduate student across all fields in Applied Science who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to leadership. The successful awardee will be an individual who has made a significant impact to the UBC and APSC community through their individual and collective participation in areas of academic governance and community service.

Nominations will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary selection committee appointed by the Dean’s office.

The selection committee discussion will generally be on the following:

• Review on Nominee’s CV and letters of reference for Nominee’s strategic thinking, innovation, and action with a focus on making significant contributions to the quality of the graduate student experience by supporting students’ personal and professional development.

Eligibility requirements:

• Nominee must have graduated from the Faculty of Applied Science at Vancouver campus and School of Engineering Okanagan Campus within the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline.
• Any thesis defended in the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline
• The award is primarily for PhD students but exceptional research-based Masters students will also be considered.

  • A copy of external thesis examiner report or a reference letter from the external thesis examiner

• Nominee’s qualities – rigorous critical thinking and analysis abilities, independence, perseverance, originality, organizational skills, interest in discovery, and research ability,
• Thesis - evidence of detailed methodology, accurate results, and thorough research; clarity of ideas and ability to translate complex or technical information into a succinct and clear summary of work; and verification of knowledge claims

CV

• Recognitions: contributions, presentations, research prizes and other indicators of Nominee’s research productivity
• Publications: a list of publications produced by Nominee. Publication activity of Nominee will be reviewed in consideration of expectation of their academic experience

Eligibility requirements:

• The award is open to any UBC Graduate Teaching Assistant at UBC Vancouver who has been acting in the position during the current academic year (2022-23) and/or the preceding academic year (2020-21).

How to apply:

• The person nominating the TA, or the self-nominee, must compile a dossier of information about the nominee’s work as a TA. A single PDF document is recommended. For more information on the required documents, please refer to Appendix I and II in the Call for Nomination Document. 
• The dossier must be forwarded to the Head’s or Director’s Office by the deadline of March 1, 2024.
• Nominations are encouraged from faculty supervisors (professors, senior laboratory instructors) of the Graduate Teaching Assistant nominee, from colleagues working closely with the nominee, and from the students who attended the nominee’s class or laboratory. TAs can also self-nominate for the award.

Eligibility requirements:  

• Students must have submitted the final copy of their thesis to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between January 1 and December 31 year prior to the award deadline.
• Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents and International Citizens can apply.
• The Governor General’s Gold Medal competition is open to nominations from all graduate programs at UBC via their Faculty Dean’s Office.

• All university-level transcripts (original or certified true copy of official transcripts from universities besides UBC; copy of Academic History from SISC will be accepted in place of official UBC transcript)

• Letter of support from thesis supervisor
• Letter of support from Department Head

Eligibility requirements:  

• self-identify as a female
• possess Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency Status
• be currently enrolled full-time at a PhD level in an accredited Engineering Program within Canada
• have an undergraduate degree from an accredited Canadian engineering program, or have a P. Eng. designation or be a recognized E.I.T. in their province of residence.

How to apply:

• The application has a number of components and it is recommended that students leave themselves plenty of time to complete the application and obtain references.
• The final award requirement is a letter of support from the Dean or his designate. In order to allow enough time to write these letters, students must submit ONLY the written portions of their application to ea.assist@apsc.ubc.ca by December 7, 2021 in a single pdf titled “CEMF-campusofstudy-lastname-firstname.”
• Students are responsible for submitting their complete application directly to CEMF by the January 10^th deadline, minus the letter of support from the dean, which we are instructed to submit directly to CEMF as well.
